Natural VS. Processed Food

Natural foods can be used by the body because they haven't been altered. As such they can also go bad, like stale bread, or any food that is left to sit out too long. The point is that the best foods are the ones that CAN go bad; we want a food to be able to go bad. It's just that we need to eat them before they go bad. This is the whole point of processing - this simple issue is what the whole controversy is about. Longer shelf life equals higher profits. Foods that can't go bad have the longest shelf life. The problem is that the usable nutrients in food are exactly what must be removed in order to have prolonged shelf life. And that's what the science of food processing focuses on: learning better and better ways of taking the perishable nutrients out of foods so that they'll last longer. But what happens when these devitalized Frankenfoods get into our bodies? They're preserved - they're resistant to being changed and broken down. But that's what digestion is: breaking down the foods into usable components. Processed foods are digested poorly, if at all. They clog the digestive tract and make us fat. And cause chronic allergies as the body unsuccessfully tries to expel them.

It is TIME!

It is time... to go green, be 100% truthful and natural, do what we can and make a difference. I have always had a passion for helping the Earth stay as beautiful as it is and doing everything and anything that is all natural. I am so passionate about these topics right now probably because I have children of my own. I have switched over to non-toxic cleaners, organic food, all natural (and I mean ALL natural) personal products and supplements. I am wondering what others are thinking about all of this GREEN, natural, non-toxic, non-polluting and health and wellness stuff. SO, let me hear it....

Green Goes with Everything!

Ok, so I love my copy of Green Goes with Everything by Sloan Barnett. I love that she has done the research that I don't have time to do. I have been trying to but just can't get to it all. I haven't finished it yet but I love what I have read so far. Check it out!

The Dirty Dozen

This is one way I can save money and my family's health. I feel like we eat more fruits and veggies since we started eating mostly organic, locally grown, and fresh produce. They taste better to us and our weight does not fluctuate as much. Here is a list I found and use when I shop!!! I know it's expensive to buy organic but I have found that it is cheaper at farmer's markets and smaller health food stores like Trader Joe's and Fresh & Easy!

Organic Dirty Dozen
A simulation of thousands of consumers eating high and low pesticide diets shows that people can lower their pesticide exposure by 90 percent by avoiding the top twelve most contaminated fruits and vegetables and eating the least contaminated instead. Eating the 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables, on average, will expose a person to nearly 20 pesticides per day. Eating the 12 least contaminatefd will expose a person to a fraction over two pesticides per day. With that in mind, the Environmental Working Group brings us their list of the most contaminated (the dirty dozen!) and least contaminated fruits and vegetables out there.

12 Most Contaminated - Buy These Organic• Apples• Bell Peppers• Celery• Cherries• Imported Grapes• Nectarines• Peaches• Pears• Potatoes• Red Raspberries• Spinach• Strawberries

12 Least Contaminated• Asparagus• Avocados• Bananas• Broccoli• Cauliflower• Corn (sweet)• Kiwi• Mangos• Onions• Papaya• Pineapples• Peas (sweet)

The Beginning of a lifelong Journey!!!

David and I are on a mission to live as healthfully and naturally as we can in this preservative-crazed society. We started on this journey about six years ago when we got married. Abby, my step-daughter, was the first reason to start paying attention to what types of food, cleaning, and personal products I was bringing into the house. Since then we have switched many of our household products, personal products, and nutrition to all-natural!! It has been a slow journey because there is so much to learn and understand that goes into making these changes.

I now have two boys of my own and a girl on the way. I am so grateful for the support of my husband, mother and friends during this journey! I hope this blog will help you on your journey as well. Good luck and stay tuned for more information...
